Q1: When will newly-recruited staff be informed about their employment?

A:
In accordance with the Operating Directions of Academia Sinica’s Employment Review, the employment and review process for newly-recruited staff shall take at least 6 months. After reviewed by the employment unit and approved by the Academic Affairs Office (around 2 months), newly-recruited staff will be informed of the commencement of employment date. To be updated with the process, it is advised to keep in touch with the personnel clerk at the employment unit.

Q2: Are newly-recruited staff allowed to have dual citizenship?

A:
Yes, research fellows and research specialists in Academia Sinica are allowed to hold dual citizenship since the Nationality Act loosened the regulation for research staff (including part-time academic research supervisors) with dual nationality.

 Q3: Can Assistant Research Fellows apply for tenured employment while applying for promotion?

A:
The first term of employment for Assistant Research Fellows is five years, and the employment will be renewed for another 3 years if it is approved by the Operating Directions of Academia Sinica Employment Review before the end of first term. If fellows are not promoted before the end of term, their renewed employment will be denied. When Assistant Research Fellows apply to be promoted as Associate Research Fellows, they must be recommended by the Director and approved by the President. The term will end at age 65. Q4: Can Associate Research Fellows apply for tenured employment while applying for renewed employment?

A:
Yes, when Associate Research Fellows apply for initial or renewed employment, they can also apply for tenured employment that will end at age 65. The length of first two terms is 5 years respectively, and it becomes 3 years for each term after the 2nd term. Before the end of each term, applications for renewed employment need to be approved by the Operating Directions of Academia Sinica Employment Review. Q5: Can previous work experience outside Academia Sinica raise salary level for newly-recruited staff?

A:
Yes, salary can be assessed based on one’s seniority (ex. teaching or research) after acquiring the required degree (ex. PhD), one level a year.
